A Stopper is any food, drink or activity that signifies to your brain that your eating occasion has ended. For example, if you are sitting down at a restaurant and the waiter brings you a much too big portion, you can use a Stopper when you know intellectually that you have eaten enough to be satisfied and this will allow you to avoid overeating.
Stoppers work because they allow you to separate from the act of eating long enough to notice that you are indeed full and this allows you to easily prevent overeating. Stoppers can also cut short a snack. If you know that all you need is a small snack to get you through until dinner then you can eat a small snack and end with a Stopper.
Okay, so what is a good example of a Stopper. I think the most popular one that my clients use is a stick of sugar-free gum. This is a favorite for many reasons, first of all it is convenient, secondly chewing gum doesn’t even allow you the possibility of eating anything additional and thirdly sugar-free gum has very few calories.
Other favorite examples include a cup of hot tea or coffee, since these drinks need to be sipped they provide the adequate time to separate from eating so you can feel full. You could also use a few mints, you could brush your teeth, fold your napkin over your plate or use any item that helps you disconnect from eating without adding additional calories, in other words, your Stopper should not be a dessert item.
