Mom of Teenage Girls! Help Your Daughter Create A Healthy Body Image
“How do you promote a healthy body image?”
What you may not know is that a healthy body image starts, when children are very young. If you are walking around the house complaining you feel fat or skimp in eating meals often, they will pick up on this in ways you may not understand. Most children think their parents are cool and beautiful, and if you show them your faults, they are going to think they have something wrong with them also, which means their healthy body image even when they are older, will be compromised.
Have you ever watched TV and thought that most of the women you see are just simply to thin, you’re not alone. In fact, what is more amazing is that as thin as they look, they are thinner than that. The camera has added ten pounds. Models tend to be thin too, along with other concerns are showing our little daughters that they are not good enough. This is a false misconception, but is the message they are sending. Parents have to make sure that they and their children have a good, healthy body image.
You not only have to monitor what you do but what your children are watching on television, in print, and by their associations with friends. A much better approach is talk to them about being too skinny. My favorite mother’s saying, “Real Women Have Meat on Their Bones”. Those models on TV and in magazines are not the real norm and what most people feel is healthy. They should be thinking about a healthier body image instead of trying to fit into a size 0 to 00 being just skin and bones.
You should talk about healthy eating and exercise, if you are not happy with your own body image and working on lowering your weight. Thus being a role, model for your own kids, if you have problems talking to them. Kids like to see rather than be drummed at and here is a wonderful source at the top of the article. This will kick it up a notch in learning good things about a healthy body image.
What you want to show them that having confidence, is the best direction to go and love who you are.
